Just from a cost standpoint, i'm leaning more towards the 152, but do you guys think I would benefit more from flying the 172? A friend of mine has offered flight lessons for slightly cheaper in a 172 (2 dollars per Tach hour), but at a significantly less convenient airport that is not controlled. The problem is that most pilots raised on a diet of Cessna 150/152/172 and Piper Cherokee trainers really have no idea what a real spin feels like. In my experience, it's a lot easier to find a 172 for rental than a 150/152. Today the C152 seems like a toy comparing to anything else, the 172 included.

That's just my opinion, after going back seat in a 172 the size difference is blatantly obvious, there is loads more space in the 172. I had no troubles with checkouts on 172s and Warriors after I finished my PPL and as all of the V speeds tend to be within 5 or 10 kts of each other it is not a problem to remember them when you transition between the different types. I still regularly hire a 152 just because they're so much fun.
I'll have to choose between either training in a cessna 152 or 172. However, they are a very simple and easy aeroplane to fly, they are also a very forgiving aircraft, and if you feel comfortable in it, I would definitely recommend starting in the 152, you will also save money in them, even if its only 20 bucks an hour after 35hours of flying that add up to about 700 bucks. Even though I'm 6'1" and 200lbs, I'd still choose to do my flight training in a 152, despite those annoyances, because the cost savings really do add up. Some survey friends of mine say the jump up to 182s to 206s and 210s gets considerably more stable and less responsive every time, as well as with any bigger and heavier plane. If you live in a high-density altitude area, you might not be able to fly on hot days (but that should be a moot point since we're getting into winter). For what it's worth, I agree with what 30Echo said. I suppose whether the 172 feels different from a 152 depends a lot on how big you are. For a 40-60 hour newly minted private pilot, the difference between a 172 and a 150 is pretty substantial. If you change airplanes in the middle of your training you will feel the difference and you will probably have to spend extra money just getting used to the 172. Bottom line is get your license however you can (cheaper is good) and then fly! There's a lot to be said for learning in an airplane that is demanding of the student. So, “big” difference? The cabin widths are basically the exact same!
