I agree it will almost certainly be suspension first, but at the moment you don't even know what stock suspension feels like. Modifying yourself takes a lot of time (riding time as the bike is out of commission) and the procuring of parts may be a hassle as well you may go over the budget you intended.

I've been riding my '06 SV650 long enough (11,000 miles) for the suspension to feel a little worn out -- the ride is steadily getting harsher and less controlled. I plan on doing my suspension and brakes there. that's just a waste of money.

If the fork seals ever wear out during my lifetime, I will change the fork oil to 20 weight, but that's all I'm ever gonna do to that little fun bike. you're better off buying a used bike for your first. There's a few bikes out there that have parts available or you can go completely all out and replace it with a new upgraded version (cost a bit though...). At least when I buy new I know that the manufacturer will be required to fix any and all issues that may arise (Implied warranty in my state is that a new product purchased in or shipped into the state is to be covered by the manufacturer for four years and is required to last those four years as its intended use from the manufacturer). And with the SV650 still in production, and so many still in circulation, it’s likely to remain a popular used-bike budget choice for some time yet.

You can always switch it up in 6 months or a year or whenever. Offering light, responsive handling, and a strong spread of usable torque from a beautifully balanced engine, the SV650 remains a superb road and track tool. It is what it is. I almost bought into the so-called "conventional wisdom" that said I needed to make a Frankenbike out of my 2008 SV650SF, but all I've done to it is replace the fork spring spacers with 1/4 inch longer spacers I kept when I installed Progressive springs in my 1986 GSXR750.

However, the stock bike is easily upgraded and JHS provide a range of performance enhancing modifications that really sharpen it up. A community for all of us that have a strange love for the Suzuki SV650, 1000, and the Gladius. You want to know how the bike feels, and what you're not happy with. You can do the work 1 on 1 with a mechanic so you know the work is done properly with the right tools, but you get to actually do the work yourself and learn/ understand more about the bike. The smart thing to do is take it easy with "upgrades" and bolt on stuff. We use these on our own racing machines and have found them to deliver exceptional levels of grip and predictable control, very well suited to the SV’s handling characteristics. Road & race enhancements I've heard a lot of suggestions for modifying the suspension as the stock is said to be too soft.

Get the light weight, the torquey v-twin power curve, and then nimble handling of fully adjustable suspension all at bargain pricing. First appearing in 1999, and then re-styled from 2003 with the addition of fuel injection and adjustable fork preload. Get a bike first and spend a decent amount of time on it before you modify or upgrade anything, especially related to performance. The rear is something I can't remember which parts fit it.

I weigh 220 with my gear and I cannot bottom out the front forks with the preload set on the next to the last position. I spent about a year on stock suspension while learning to ride and I weighed much more than you at the time. Older bikes hold their value much better, you dont have to worry about doing stupid shit like dropping them at a stoplight, and if you feel like it you can always sell it and get a new bike! In 2003 it was joined by the SV1000 – essentially the same idea, but delivering strong, linear drive from its 998cc powerplant – a slightly de-tuned version of the notorious TL1000 motor. I understand that I will mess up and drop it and I fully aware of that.
