My famous homemade shepherds pie

Shepherd’s pie is a delicious recipe with meat and mashed potatoes baked in the oven. A traditional dish in the UK ideal for cold days. Today we tell you how to prepare the shepherd’s pie.

It is usually prepared with beef, vegetables and mashed potatos This recipe came up, like so many others, because of the need to take advantage of leftover meat. Potatoes and vegetables were easy to get in rural areas, it was not uncommon to end up combining them.

The pie is very versatile as even the housewives added cheese or tomato residues to it. In the United Kingdom this pie was later changed to a fish version and also the vegetarian choice which includes vegetables in place of ground meat.

Shepherd’s pie

  • 4 peeled potatoes in quarters
  • 4 cups of ground beef
  • 1 cup of cooked vegetable stew (from the jar, with peas, carrots, beans)
  • 1 onion cut into pieces
  • 1 chopped garlic
  • Half a teaspoon of dried oregano
  • 1 tablespoon of soy sauce
  • Salt and pepper
  • One spoonful of chopped parsley
  • 150 ml of meat broth
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Two teaspoons of butter

Peel the potatoes and place them in the instant pot with 200 ml of water, a bay leaf and a little salt. Schedule 15 minutes in the instant pot. While cutting into pieces the onion, and garlic.

Prepare a casserole or deep frying pan with oil and fry for two minutes. Add the minced meat and brown for a few minutes and add the cooked vegetables from the pot well drained.

Add half of the meat stock, pepper, the dry oregano, the soy sauce and some chopped parsley. Mix, and lower the heat to the minimum. Cook for 2 minutes, when the express pot is finished, take out the potatoes. Drain them and mash them in the blender together with the rest of the meat stock and two teaspoons of butter.

Prepare a baking tin and first pour the mixture of minced meat and vegetables, smoothing it well with a spoon. Pour over the meat the mashed potatoes. Bake in the middle of the oven for 20 minutes at 180 degrees. After the baking time, let it cool down a little bit before serving.
