Keeping the oven clean at all times is of utmost importance since baked-on food can emit carcinogens when it burns over and over again. Commercial oven cleaners are packed with toxins which come in contact with the skin.
Green cleaning products and natural over cleaning can be useful, but it turns out that something as simple as the combination of baking soda and vinegar is enough to de-grime your over and leave it sparkling. If this sounds appealing enough, let`s go into more details.
Lye and ammonia are often found in oven cleaners and then tend to break through the skin by removing its layers. Consequently, the fumes eventually reach the lungs. The situation gets worse each time you use the oven again, as the toxins end up in the next thing you bake.
It has been scientifically shown that Mr.Muscle oven and grill cleaner as well as Easy-Off oven cleaner are loaded with poisons which cause difficulty breathing because of the fumes and swelling in the throat. The most common side effects of these toxins include blood in the stool, abdominal pain, vomiting with blood, fainting, organ damage, burning in the nose, eyes, and ears, and even vision impairment.
You should be also concerned about other toxic ingredients, such as butane, diethylene glycol monobutyl ethe, monoethanolamine (MEA), and, sodium hydroxide (lye), all of which are extremely detrimental to your health and are associated with serious adverse side effects.
With this being said, why not use a homemade over cleaner? The one presented in this article is easy-to-make; it uses simple ingredients, and is as effective as commercially bought oven cleaners.

- glass bowl
- a pastry brush or similar
- scrub sponge
First, mix the castile soap and baking soda in the glass bowl. Castile soap is one of the best options as it`s all-natural and it uses chemical-free ingredients. You can even wash your face with it, clean the window, or scrub the tub.
Baking soda is also extremely effective when it comes to oven cleaning, as its abrasive texture helps remove baked-on food. What makes it a strong cleaning agent is its sodium bicarbonate content, which can be used to clean the dishes and any surface in the home.
Adding vinegar and orange essential oil is the next step! Blend them and add water to create a thick paste. These ingredients are included for a very good reason, as vinegar provides anti-bacterial properties while orange essential oil it also antibacterial and it adds a nice, refreshing scent.
Brush the oven cleaner over the entire surface by using a pastry brush and leave it on for 6-8 hours or overnight, if possible. Then, wipe it off with a sponge soaked in water. Clean the sponge each time you wipe and change the water a few times.
